Culinary historians believe waffles can be traced back to ancient Greece, where people roasted flat cakes between metal plates on long wooden sticks.
The Greeks called these cakes Obelios – Obelius is a derivative of the name Obelix – who, if you recall, was a friend to Asterix. He wore blue striped oversized trousers, a large moustache and pigtails under a metal horned helmet. Maybe his legendary midriff was possibly due to eating too many Obelius cakes i.e. Greek cakes.
Hmmm…. but wasn‘t Asterix and Obelix of French Origin?
How long you cook the waffles for, as well as how many you make, will depend on the waffle iron you’re using. The quantity and cooking times in this recipe are perfect for my waffle iron. As you are operating a different machine, perhaps follow the directions for quantities and cooking times that come with it.
I advise you to preheat your oven to 120°C/100°C Fan before you start so that you can pop the waffles on a wire rack over a baking sheet as you make them, to keep them warm. This also helps to give them a lovely crisp crust.
